Why Wait to Plant until April?

If you’re wanting to get a head start on your planting, you may want to reconsider. Though you may be really excited to get those plants in the ground and start your aesthetic and practical gardening together, waiting until April 15 is the proper choice.

April is the unofficial “official” month to begin planting outdoors. Why?

This is because it’s usually the date of the last freeze, or the date when freezing will be the least likely to occur in the spring season. Of course, this is not always the case, as the weather is unpredictable sometimes, but that’s the safest course to go on for your plants.

Even if the freeze date is earlier than that, most plants need warmth and good soil to grow well. If spring is still a bit too chilly for the plants you already put in the ground, they most likely will not grow strong and healthy, or at all.

Picking the Right Plants for You

Aesthetics

When the start of the season appears, it can be difficult to know exactly what you want to plant, and how you want it to look. Aesthetics can really take the lead here, especially if you are growing perennials.

Vegetable gardens can have aesthetics, too. There are ways to organize the seeds so they grow into neat rows, as well as appealing groups. Planning this out in advance will help you to achieve this kind of thing.

Soil Needs

Soil needs are different everywhere you go. In Zone 6 in Ohio, the soil needs to be tilled well, fertilized with some kind of compost or fertilizer, and be able to be well-drained.

Having healthy soil will make your plants grow exponentially better than they would without good soil. It can really make all the difference for your vegetables, fruits, or flowers.

What Kind of Garden do you Want?

Asking yourself this question at the beginning can be helpful, as it will make you understand what kind of seeds to buy and when to plant them.

Having a garden that entails all sorts of plants like fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, and more, can be overwhelming. It’s best to figure out a few of the categories and plant them at a time if you are a beginner.
