Spring is about to hit, which means that now is the time to plan your Ohio garden.

Spring in Ohio is exciting, but gardening can be overwhelming, especially for beginning gardeners. There are so many plant options to choose from and so much to do to prepare for spring!

Here are some guidelines to help you plan your garden in Ohio this spring.

List Your Gardening Goals

What do you want to do with your garden?

Do you want a tranquil Zen garden with a water feature?  Do you want a pepper paradise?  Do you want abundant vegetables for canning and preserving?  Do you want an herb garden?  Do you want a sea of colorful flowers?  Do you want tall shrubs for privacy?  Do you want a combination of everything?

Starting with your gardening goals and making a garden planning checklist will guide you to what plants and supplies you’ll need to make your gardening dream a reality.

Understand Your Garden Space

Look at your garden, and consider your space’s:

  • Sun exposure
  • Shade protection
  • Available room
  • Soil quality
  • Water availability

You can change these elements to some extent—you can provide more shade, get rid of plants or rocks to make more room, set up a watering system, and amend the Ohio soil. However, some aspects of your garden, such as sun exposure, may be difficult to change. That doesn’t mean your gardening dreams are dashed, though.

You can still pursue your gardening dreams, even without the ideal garden space. You may just need to get creative with some workarounds.

Choose Plants for Your Garden

Once you’ve decided on your gardening goals and analyzed your available garden space, it’s time to choose your plants and plan your garden.  This is one of the best and most fun parts of gardening.  Below are some ideas for you.
